Baby Bad Words

It is official, the days of being able to curse and watch movies with foul language are over. A moment of silence might be appropriate now…

Of course we had a few brushes with repeating bad words before. Like when Nola went around saying “oh sh!t” whenever she dropped a toy. But that felt like nothing and we couldn’t help but laugh it off. Not this time. Nope, she has gone and repeated something that even the most laid back of parents would gasp if repeated in their presence.

I am pretty sure that if I said this around my parents today, my mom would grab a bar of soap and wash my mouth out. So what happened? Last week, I was telling Lynsey a joke that involved some foul wordage not thinking of the implications. Nola mimicked the inappropriate phrase by saying “mucka bucka”…you can only guess what she was repeating.

Like Cam in this clip from modern family, Lynsey and I immediately started laughing. Of course Nola repeated the words several times. What made this particularly hilarious was the way she said it. Imagine her standing in the kitchen screaming “mucka buckaaaaaa.”

We entertained it for a little, but now Lynsey and I both realize this needs to end. I can picture it now, the three of us walking through Target and Nola yelling “Mucka Buckaaaaaaa” at one of us. So that is it. The days of freely being able to curse and carry on are over. No more repeating movie phrases with any word that we don’t want Nola to repeat. No more yelling profanity at athletic teams on T.V. No more practicing my rapping in the car while Nola is with me.

To most of you this probably doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I have lived the last 10 years of my life not filtering my language. Even when I was around other people’s kids, I could simply write it off with an apology. But not now. Every time Nola says a bad word, I am likely to blame.

That is it for this week. I am saying goodbye to cursing. At least until my little parrot is old enough to understand that some words are better left unsaid, especially by her.

Leave us a comment if you have also had to say goodbye to your good natured potty-mouth, and your if you have a funny story or two about your own little parrot.

Yes, Dan you are right about that bar of soap. Do I need to send Lynsey a special brand.
PS Pop pop wants to know if the ban applies to him as well> I nudged him yes.

This made me laugh especially since there was a period early on in Saya’s life where she was repeatedly saying “sh*t”. For every step she went up that word came out. When the toy fell, like Nola. Unfortunately, that was my word of choice when something happened. Every time though, we immediately corrected her by saying another word “Ship”, “sit”, etc. They were definitely funny, not supposed to be funny, moments. ;)
